Fantasy Book

Granny’s Dragon is a fantasy book about a little girl who is afraid of a monster in her rom. Granny tries to convince the little girl that the monster will not get her because he will be busy getting ready for bed too. The little girl does not believe Granny, so Granny says she will cook up some monster stew and leave it outside the bedroom door so the monster will be full and won’t need to eat her. Granny tells the little girl that she will get her very large but good-hearted dragon to stand guard by her bed all night and protect her. The little girl is okay with this and she is able to go to sleep.

The illustrations in this book look like they were done in watercolor. The colors are very bright and vivid and show the fun nature of the book. The text placement is informal and the illustrations are done in different styles. Some of the illustrations are done on double-page spreads and some are vignette styles.

This book would be appropriate for younger elementary age children. This book could be used to teach a lesson on family relationships (between Granny and the little girl) or to teach a lesson on things that scared us when we were younger. Students could write a narrative story about a time they were scared or a time when someone in their family helped them overcome something.

Granny’s Dragon has not won any awards that I am aware of, but Lisa McCourt has written many children’s books. This is a very cute book that I would recommend reading.
